DIY Moon Sand (a.k.a. Cloud Dough)

Here’s another great sensory play toy for kids (and adults too) – DIY moon sand. It’s a lot like playdough or kinetic sand, but a little smoother in texture. It holds it shape well when molded with a cup or your hands, but crumbles easily under pressure. It is not noticeably oily to the touch – but take note, if you add too much oil you will see some oily residue from where this DIY moon sand was sitting.

Ingredients

  • 8 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup oil (tea tree oil is a good option for antibacterial effects, and a little essential oils is a great way to add a nice scent to your DIY moon sand)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

The instructions for this DIY moon sand are about as simple as you can get – simply pour the oil into the flour and mix. Note though, it’s not a bad idea to pour about 2/3 of the oil in first and then add a little more as you feel necessary. You don’t want your DIY moon sand to be oily to the touch. Of course, if you do make it too oily you can always add more flour.

You can split the batch up into multiple mini-batches and optionally add a few drops of food coloring to each mini-batch to create different colors for playing.
