Vinyl Roll Storage Rack

We obviously do a lot of crafting, and our crafting uses a lot of vinyl. In fact, my wife seems to be making something new with vinyl letters or designs almost every day. As such, she has a lot of rolls of vinyl that were always laying in one of the shelves in the closet – until I made her a quick and simple vinyl roll storage rack.

If you follow these plans, you’ll build a vinyl roll storage rack exactly like the one I built for my wife. It will be 4′ tall and will be able to easily accommodate 11 rolls of 12″ wide vinyl. The whole project should take you less than two hours to build, and then another hour or so to paint or stain depending on how you would like yours finished. Plus, this great solution for storing rolls of vinyl can be hidden behind a laundry room door so it doesn’t take up much space at all!

Materials Required

  • 2 – 1″ x 4″ x 6′
  • 11 – 1/2″ x 16″ wood dowels
  • 1 – 1″ x 2″ x 2′

Tools Required

  • Saw – circular, miter, or table saw
  • Drill or drill press and drill bits.
  • Screw driver and 2″ wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Tape measure
  • Tape

Step 1: Cut boards and dowels to length

For this vinyl storage rack, it’s best to get all of your cutting out of the way at the beginning. There are no complicated cuts to make, so this step should only take you a few minutes and then you are done with the saws.

Start by cutting all of your dowels down to 16″ in length. This will leave them long enough to allow them to stick out both sides of the vinyl roll storage rack and help prevent them from falling out when you’re accessing your vinyl.

Next, cut your 1x4s down to have two pieces 48″ in length and two pieces 13″ in length. Finish up by cutting your 1×2 down to 13″ in length as well.

Step 2: Drill holes for your dowels

Before you start drilling holes through your 1x4s, it’s a good practice to tape them both together, ensuring the ends are lined up. This way you will drill through them both together and ensure the holes are perfectly aligned.

You will want your holes 1″ in from the front edge of the rack, and spaced every 4″ on center as shown in the images below. If you use a 1/2″ drill bit, your dowels will fit very tightly in the holes (especially if you get paint in the holes), and you will probably have to do a little extra sanding to get the dowels in and out easily. Alternatively, you can use a 9/16″ drill bit and your dowels will have a much looser feel. We recommend trying both on some scrap wood to see which you prefer.

Step 3: Build the frame

Now that you have all of your pieces prepped, it’s time to assemble the frame. This step should be pretty straightforward and simple if you have basic wood working skills. Start by pre-drilling two holes in each end of each 48″ boards, and then use wood glue and 2″ wood screws to attach the top and bottom pieces. Make certain your corners are square! Then attach the 1×2 strip to the back of the top as shown below using 2″ wood screws and pre-drilled holes. This piece will add extra stability and provide a place to drive screws though in order to attach to the wall.

Step 4: Finish

By this point you are done and ready to paint or stain and hang your vinyl rolls. After the paint or stain has dried, slide your dowels through the holes on one side and then through the vinyl rolls and out the holes on the other side of your new vinyl roll storage rack.
