Bamboo toothbrushes and charcoal toothpaste

Did you know that the vast majority of your standard plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills and NEVER biodegrade? Or they don’t even reach the landfill and wind up in our oceans? Sure, a single toothbrush isn’t that big and most people don’t go through that many every year – but when you want to start going green switching to bamboo toothbrushes is one of the easiest things you can do. And they aren’t that expensive either, you can order bamboo toothbrushes for under $2 each.

Believe it or not, using a bamboo toothbrush is not as hard to get used to as you would think. We got our first set about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and it only took a few brushings to get accustomed to the difference – and that includes going from a hard bristle in my old plastic brush to a soft bristle in my new, fully biodegradable, bamboo toothbrush.

Did I mention these bamboo toothbrushes are fully biodegradable? When you are done using one, you could literally just throw it out in your backyard and it would decompose just like any of the sticks that have fallen from your trees.

Along with our new toothbrushes, we’ve also made the switch to flouride-free activated charcoal toothpaste. You know, the kind that turns your mouth black while you are brushing. We’ve tried two different varieties over the last few weeks, and I can honestly say the activated charcoal toothpaste tastes no different than your “normal” over the coubter toothpaste. There are lots of varieties of activated charcoal toothpaste on the market, and most of them are free of flourides, dyes, and artificial flavors. Even better, if you look around enough you can even find brands that come in biodegradable tubes! So no long term impacts from the packaging!

It may seem scary, or maybe it just feels too “hippie tree hugfer” for you. But I promise, try making the change for just a week and you can get used to them too. Who knows, you may even find yourself liking them better!
