Homemade Organic Lip Balm, basic recipe

Making your own homemade organic lip balm is quick, easy, and not expensive at all.  We bought all of our ingredients straight off of Amazon by the pound – and we’ll certainly have enough supplies to make way more than we could have bought for the same amounts.   Plus, the best part of making your own lip balm is that you know exactly what’s going in it – so there’s no ingredients you can’t pronounce!

Ingredients:

Measure out appropriate amounts of bees wax, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and Shea butter based on the above ratios.  For example, if you use 1/4 cup bees wax, use 1/4 cup cocoa butter, 1/8 cup coconut oil, and 1/8 Shea butter.  These amounts will make about 10-12 ounces of lip balm.

Place these four ingredients into a glass measuring cup or a metal bowl.   Place the container into a shallow pot of boiling water on the stove.  If you have a double boiler, you can use that instead; but do the waxy nature of the mixture, I’d recommend using something older that you may be willing to dedicate to making homemade lip balm or soaps.

Keep stirring the mixture until all of the ingredients melt.  The bees wax should be the last ingredient to melt (you can see this in the third picture in the gallery below).

Once all of the ingredients are fully melted, take the mixture off the heat and begin the cooling process.  This is when you can add additional flavoring (flavored oils work well, and is typically safe for use on your lips).  Make certain you get them added in quick, as you will usually have about 2-5 minutes before this homemade lip balm starts to solidify.

After you have any desired flavors mixed in, pour your homemade lip balm into either lip balm tubes or lip balm tins.  Once you have your homemade lip balm in containers, wait until it fully cools before putting on the lids.
