Folding 1×6 sawhorses

Continuing our series on sawhorse designs, here are plans for folding 1×6 sawhorses. These folding sawhorses are very light compared to those made of 2x4s, and since they fold they are also extremely portable.

Materials needed for two sawhorses:

  • 6 – 1×6 @ 8′ (for a pair)
  • Paracord 550
  • 2 – 4″ hinges
  • Exterior wood glue
  • 1 1/4″ exterior grade wood screws

Building your own folding 1×6 sawhorse

The construction of these folding 1×6 sawhorses is simple and straight-forward. All of the pieces are cut to the same 32″ length, but you can easily adjust that length to make them suit your needs.

  1. Start by cutting your sixteen pieces of 1×6 to 32″. That’s eight pieces per sawhorse. If you want them wider or narrower, change the length on half of those boards – but leave the legs at 32″ unless you also want to change the height.
  2. Using a framing square to ensure you are connecting them at 90°, use wood glue and four exterior grade screws per joint to join all of the pieces.
  3. Attach the hinges to the tops of all legs, ensuring the top of the hinge is lower than the top of the sawhorse by at least 1/8″. This should help prevent you from hitting the hinge with a saw blade when making cuts.
  4. Drill two 1/4″ holes near the center of the horizontal pieces.
  5. Run a long piece of paracord between the lower legs and looping it back through the corresponding holes, and then tie it to itself. This piece forms a stretcher that will prevent the legs from spreading farther than desired when the folding 1×6 sawhorses are opened.
  6. Now run a short piece of paracord through the holes in the upper pieces, to create a carrying handle.
