Cutting your wine rack pieces

There are only two variations to the pieces required for these wine rack plans. The first is 7 3/4″ long, while the other is 16 1/4″ long. You need to cut four of each piece from your 1×6 stock.

Once you have these pieces cut you need measure out the layout shown in the diagram below. Cut the grooves into each piece using a hand saw or jig saw and follow up with a good sharp chisel to make the corners nice and square. NOTE: If you just bought a new wood chisel, don’t expect it to be sharp straight from the store. Spend a few minutes sharpening it before trying to use it.

Fit and glue the wine rack together

With the pieces cut, you want to dry fit them altogether to ensure the fit is tight. Once you are happy with the fit, disassemble and now is the time to apply stain and finish to your wine rack. It’ll be much more difficult to get a good finish into all of the corners once the piece is assembled.

After the finish is dry, apply wood glue to all three sides of the inside of each groove and reassemble. Once the wood glue has dried (a good wood glue is typically fully cured within 24 hours), your DIY wine rack is ready to use!

  1. What would I have to do to make this longer. I need to build this 9 ft long since the top shelf of my car is a 9 ft shelf

    1. Adam,
You would really just need to keep repeating the pieces with 3 grooves until you had enough to cover that span. Probably about 24 of those pieces. Then you would interlock them as in the original design

      1. O that’s kinda what I was thinking but wasn’t sure. I’m a novice wood worker and have a bar we are building in our new house and want to tackle it.

Thank you so much for the insight. Love the design. Will have to post pictures when done.
