DIY right angle corner clamping jig

A right angle corner clamping jig is an indispensable tool for any shop that produces any amount of projects with 90 degree miters.  Building your own DIY right angle corner clamping jig is quick and easy, so there shouldn’t be any excuses to not have at least one on hand – personally I like to make them in sets of four when I need new ones.

I just so happened to need a new set today, so I grabbed four pieces of scrap wood I had laying around after making a set of table pedestal bases.  I already knew the scraps were a perfect 90 degrees, so I didn’t need to bother squaring them on my table saw.

Now, like I said before, when I make a corner clamping jig I like to make at least four at a time.  Doing several at a time means you can have exact duplicates of each other so that you have the option of stacking them if you need to clamp thicker pieces of wood.  A great example of this is the 2×3 barnwood boards I used in the rustic farmhouse dog kennel I’m building shown in the pictures below.

If you look at the pictures below, you can see how I stack the pieces as I drill out the 2” hole with a hole saw on my drill press.  By stacking them in this manner, and ensuring you have the edges lined up, you can let the pilot hole screw drill into the next board down continually giving you a guide to make certain the next hole is perfectly aligned with the previous hole.

Once you’ve drilled the 2” hole along one straight edge, simply repeat the process along the edge running perpendicular.

This set of four corner clamping jigs took me about 10 minutes to make, and will probably save me at least that much time when using them on the first project alone.  I highly recommend everyone taking the time to make a set for themselves.

  1. I needed these today.

It is late now in Western Australia, but, I will certainly make four such pieces tomorrow.

    Thank you to the originator.
