Custom maple shelves

As part of our kitchen makeover, we turned an old closet on the edge of the kitchen into a new small appliance pantry. I decided I wanted the shelves in the appliance pantry to match the drawers in all of our cabinets, so I custom built them from 3/4″ maple plywood. I added a 3/4″ x 3/4″ lip on the front, and added 1″ maple edge banding for the bottom edge and 2″ maple edge banding to cover the front. If done well edge banding can provide almost a seamless look.

For the shelf supports, I hit up my local Rockler store’s scrap bin and bought a few pieces of 1″ x 2″ solid maple for $9. I ripped them down into 3/4″ x 3/4″ pieces and secured them to the walls using drywall anchors. I probably should plug the holes for the screws, but it is just a small appliance pantry.
