After several months of social distancing, and trying to find ways to entertain ourselves around the house, I decided my cornhole boards needed a new look. I found a few designs for custom vinyl cornhole board wraps online, but could never find one that was exactly what I wanted. So I found a vendor who had a reasonable price on custom wraps that also included the laminate to protect the wrap, and I got to designing. I created this design on my own, combining a few different images, and adding some color and effects. I think the graphic came out awesome if I do say so myself.
Installing the wraps wasn’t too difficult, but the second one definitely went on better than the first. I started by painting the surface of my boards solid black to make the surface non-porous.
After the paint dried, I sanded them down to ensure they were nice and smooth. I didn’t want any bumps or unevenness coming through the vinyl. Then it was on to installing the wraps.
The wraps I ordered were peel-and-stick, but at 24″x48″ I had to be careful with alignment. Luckily I could move them around a little bit after I had taken off the back and laid them in place. After final positioning, it was simply a matter of using a laminate j-roller and working from the center out to get rid of all of the air bubbles. It took about 10 minutes per board of rolling to make certain there was a solid bond across the entire surface. Then it was just a matter of trimming the edges and cutting out the hole using a utility knife with a nice sharp blade.
Because the wraps I ordered have a laminate coat there isn’t a need to add any poly to protect them. So at this point they are done and ready for playing. Though I may decide to go back and add a coat of poly later just to try to seal the edges and corners down a bit. They aren’t bad now, but I can foresee them being the weak spot in the future.
I would love to see how you’ve decorated any boards you’ve built, as I think the design is what makes them uniquely our own. Please take a minute and share a picture or two of your boards with us.
