Do your kids love playdough? Ours do, and we’ve tried every homemade playdough recipe we could find and this is absolutely the best.
This easy homemade playdough recipe is way cheaper than buying playdough from the store (including the knock off versions), and takes less than 10 minutes to make. You can even make multiple batches at the same time and have a ton of homemade playdough in no time at all.
Ingredients needed:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar (buy it in bulk – not from the grocery store!)
- 1/3 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon oil (corn, vegetable, canola, etc… Tea tree oil is actually a good option for antibacterial effects. If you are into essential oils, you can use your favorite scents too!)
- Food coloring (as desired)
Directions
Using a 2 quart saucepan, add the dry ingredients:
- 1 cup of flour
- 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar, and
- 1/3 cup of salt.
Now mix in
- 1 cup of water, and
- 1 tablespoon of your oil.
Turn your burner on medium low and stir. It will start getting slightly lumpy, just keep stirring. It will soon start getting a little solid. Don’t worry if you still have some lumps at this point, they’ll be worked out later.
Depending on how hot your stove is, or if it is a second batch and your saucepan is already warm, this stirring process could go from 20 seconds up to about 3 minutes. Now is when you want to add the food coloring. It’ll be much easier to mix now while the playoffs is warm.
Once you have the color dripped in, keep stirring and the playdough will continue to thicken. Once the dough starts gathering around the spoon, it’s time to remove it from the saucepan. Here again, you may have to stir for anywhere between 20 seconds and 2 minutes.
So if you’re good at math, you’ve probably figured out that you’ll have to cook and stir the dough anywhere from 40 seconds to 4 minutes. That’s really all the longer it takes to make this homemade playdough recipe!
After removing the playdough from the saucepan, place it on a sheet of waxed paper to cool. After it has cooled, take another minute or so to knead the playdough to get any remaining lumps out.
That’s it! That’s how easy this homemade playdough recipe is, and this playdough is really the best we’ve ever used. It doesn’t dry out and crumble as easily as others, and of course, it is non-toxic.
We hope you enjoy this recipe and your kids enjoy all of the playoffs you make from it!
