Authentic Pennsylvania Dutch Shoefly Pie

There are few desserts, or even foods in general, that remind me of my childhood more than shoefly pie. We always seemed to have this Pennsylvania Dutch staple around a few times a year. Somehow shoefly pie was considered an acceptable breakfast food, which is probably what made me fall iCombine t boiling water and n love with it. What kid doesn’t want dessert for breakfast?

Shoefly pie, or more simply molasses crumb cake, is an extremely simple pie to make. Whether you start with a premade crust or make your own crust from scratch, shoefly pie doesn’t take long to make. You should be able to have this pie cooling in under an hour from the time you start.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup dark molasses
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Directions

Make the molasses syrup

Dissolve the baking soda in boiling water, then add in the dark molasses. Pour the syrup into an unbaked 9″ pie crust.

Make the crumb topping

Mix the brown sugar and flour, then rub in the shortening to make pea-sized crumbs. Sprinkle this crumb mix over the molasses syrup.

Bake the shoefly pie

Bake in a preheated ove at 375 for 35 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool.

That’s all it takes to make this delicious, authentic Pennsylvania Dutch dessert. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do – and don’t forget to let your kids have some for breakfast!
