What a great present for the beer lover in your family circle! This rustic reclaimed barn wood sign includes a bottle opener and cap catcher makes a great decorative and functional piece, and it was really a simple piece to create with some of the smaller pieces already just laying around our shop waiting for an opportunity for a second life.
Making this sign with a cap catcher really took no time at all, and would make a great DIY project for most anyone. We obviously used reclaimed barn wood, but you could just as easily source similar materials from an old pallet. All it requires is one piece of wood between 4-8 inches wide (I used a 6″ board) and at least about 24 inches in length. If you cut off 2 pieces about 4″ in width each and then cut one of those pieces in half again (so you wind up with two 3″ x 4″ pieces instead of one 6″ x 4″), then cut one more piece about 3.5″ in width, you have all of the pieces you need.
Now, use the 3.5″ x 6″ piece as the bottom of the cap catcher and the two 3″ x 4″ pieces as the sides. That leaves the 4″ x 6″ piece as the front. Depending on the thickness of your wood the 3.5″ base may be too long, so as you are dry fitting these pieces take note of any excess and trim it down to size accordingly. Once you’re happy with the fit of the pieces, glue and nail (or screw) the sides and front to the bottom and then attach the entire cap catcher to the bottom of your back board. Now, all that is left is to attach the bottle opener to the top of the board and add any decorations (like the word “beer”) you want and the project is ready to be hung up on your deck or wherever you choose.
