Here is a great example of a wren birdhouse, made from a pine fence picket. We used the same DIY birdhouse plans we provided a few weeks ago and put this together in about an hour.
The cuts required for making this birdhouse are really simple – four straight cuts for the back, top, and front; and then one cut at a 15 degree angle to make the slant in the sides. Drill two holes in the front, which in this case were 1 1/8″ for the entrance and then a 5/32″ hole right below the entrance for the perch. We used a piece of oak dowel we had just laying around the shop for the perch, so we sized the hole according to that dowel’s diameter. Then drill four holes in the bottom for drainage and the only thing left to do was assemble.
You can also see we used a plain old aluminum nail as the “lock” for the swinging side. We pre-drilled the hole for the nail so it would slide in and out fairly easily, but not be so loose that it could fall out. TIP: use a drill gauge to determine the diameter of the nail so you can drill the proper size hole and not leave the nail hanging too loosely.
We can’t wait to get this house up on one of our trees and watch the first baby birds take off from the front perch. And of course, with the swinging side, we’ll also be able to clean it out after each family has left so that a new family will nest.
