Ever since we remodeled our bathroom almost two years ago, we’ve been planning on adding some crown molding. Unfortunately it just never worked its way up to the top of my project priority list until last month. I knew I didn’t want to just add a simple one piece, store-bought, crown molding – I wanted to do something a little visually heavier and more dramatic. I wanted to do a three piece design.
I chose a simple 3 piece layout (which I include a diagram for below), using both a horizontal and vertical backer with the same base and cap routed profile. Of course, I didn’t just buy the additional pieces of molding, I used a Freud Base and Cap router bit (#99-484) to create my own using some pieces of wood I had salvaged from other remodeling projects. The third piece is a simple store bought piece of crown molding.
In an ideal world, all of the corners of our half bath would have been 90 degrees. However, like any house that is more than 30 years old, all of our corners were out of square. It didn’t help that we had re-floated all of our walls during our remodel to cover up the faux plaster treatment the previous owners had done. It just took a little more time and patience measuring each corner to ensure the joints would be tight.
After some wood filler, some caulk around the seams, and a few coats of semi-gloss white paint, this project is done and in the books. Overall, I think the three piece crown molding came out very nicely in our half bath. Now we have plans to run it through the other rooms in our downstairs – hopefully they don’t take another two years before I have time to get around to doing them!
