I just love giving old wood new life. Whether it’s wood from a barn, or wood from a pallet, there’s just a beauty, warmth, charm that is beyond compare. I love it even more when I know the wood I’m using hasn’t been shipped all over the country (or even the world) just to get to me. That’s just one of the reasons I love this rustic reclaimed barn wood bench made from ed oak barn wood, reclaimed from a barn right here in Charlotte, NC.
This is also one of my favorite bench designs, very simplistic and minimalist in feel but it showcases several fine details with the through tenon joints for the spreader on the legs and the back bevel of seat to help visually ease the ends. The legs also have a slight camber to them, being as wide as the bench seat at the bottom to ensure stability but then narrowing slightly as they go up to again add some visual ease and appeal. We opted to not put any finish on this bench, not even a wax, as the natural weathering is beautiful already but we feel that any future wear and tear will only make it even more beautiful.
All of the boards were planed, edged, and sanded to remove the roughness of the ages old barnwood, but I left just enough of the grey patina of the wood remain, which along with the nail holes, cracks and splits, reminds us that this bench has lived a previous life. This is what I like to refer to as “modern rustic” – clean and contemporary lines, but with wood that has character. Not over done with detail or embellishment to distract from the natural beauty of the wood itself.
