DIY Plans: Barn Wood Bottle Opener with Cap Catcher

For all of you who wanted to build your own barn or pallet wood bottle opener sign with the cap catcher, here are the simple instructions. The one variation in these plans is the cap catcher is designed with an angle so it is wider at the top (3.5″) than the bottom (2.5″). You should be able to easily adjust your cuts to have the bottom piece 3.5″ x 6″ (or whatever the width of your barn wood piece is) instead of just 2.5″ as in the plans.

Start with a board of your choosing at least 24″ in length. The width can be anywhere from 4″ – 6″, but for ease of direction I’m going to use 6″ as the example.

You will need to cut off a 4″ piece for the sides, which you will then need to cut in half at a 14 degree angle so as to make the slope for the sides. Don’t worry about trying to find the 14 degree angle, instead simply measure to 2.5″ in from one of the 4″ edges along one of the 6″ edges, and then measure in 3.5″ inches along the opposite 6″ edge. Now, draw a line between the two points and you have your cut line. (Note that in the diagrams below I show the base as 2.5″ in length, and top and bottom lengths of the cut sides as 3″ and 2″, respectively. This is because I cut 1″ off of the width of the side board to make it 4″ x 5″. This is completely optional and just makes the sides 1/2″ shorter).

Now cut a 3″ piece for your base. You’ll probably note this is 1/2″ longer than the short end of your sides, this is to leave room for the front to sit. Now, for the front piece, if you are super concerned with having no gaps between your pieces, you’ll want to set your mite at 9 degrees before making the next two cuts for the front. The 9 degree angle cut will allow the bottom of the front to sit flat on the top of the bottom instead of being of just a little. If you make both cuts for the front at 9 degrees you should also wind up with the top of the front being perfectly level with the top of the sides.

Next we just need to assemble the pieces, which should be fairly straightforward. I like to use exterior wood glue and a nail gun, but you could also simply hand nail it together or even use smaller wood screws.

The last thing that is left is to attach the bottle opener, which you can find a variety of styles of these from Home Depot, to the top of the board and add any decorations (like the word “beer”) you want and the project is ready to be hung up on your deck or wherever you choose.
