This barn wood side table top was made from red oak, reclaimed from a barn right here in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 2×6 beams were planed down to a smooth, flat surface which also removed the gray patina. Some folks would complain about losing the charm of the patina, but we believe this can give pieces a cleaner, more modern feel – what we like to refer to as a “modern rustic” style.

We used a 4 quarter spiral pattern, with 6″ center square on this top for a little added extra visual effect. We decided to fill in some of nail holes with a clear epoxy to make cleaning a little easier (preventing dust and grime from getting inside the wood), and due to the clear nature of the epoxy you can’t even tell it’s there. The top color is the red oak’s own natural beauty, finished with a few coats of multi-surface liquid wax to protect the wood from moisture.

The pedestal base is crafted from standard dimensional lumber, sawn and planed down to an appropriate size and accented with a few pieces of scrap molding we happened to have laying around the shop. We cut the legs at continuingly increasing angles to provide a slightly more rounded look. My favorite detail is the slight back cuts we added to the bottom half of the feet to help provide a feeling that the piece is floating, or at least a little lighter given how hefty this entire piece looks when assembled.

The pedestal base was finished with a few coats of white chalk paint, then distressed and waxed to match the rest of the furniture and built-ins of our living room.
